Caring for your Jewellery

Your jewellery goes through a lot, especially pieces worn everyday. Here's a few tips on how to keep it looking its best!
“You should only wear jewellery on days ending with y”
There are a number of things that you can do at home to keep your jewellery clean- some preventative and some to make them shine again.
Everything in its Place
We are all guilty of taking her jewellery off at the end of the night and leaving it lying, tangled and in a mess, but to avoid this invest in a nice jewellery box- or even better keep the boxes your jewellery comes in and try and keep it there organised when you aren't wearing it. This is important especially with chains to avoid tangling and possibly breaking and weakening links.
Save the Best for Last
You might think the last thing you need to do before running out the door is Spray, delay and walk away BUT that little spritz of perfume or cologne can tarnish and dull your jewellery. Its best to get yourself all ready for the day and then consider what jewellery is best for the day.
Sometimes you can do everything right but sometimes your jewellery will end up looking a little worse for wear.
One way to make it shine again is a little warm soapy water and a toothbrush. This is a great way to clean small settings and make your stones sparkle again. Just a gentle clean with a soft bristled brush and then rinsed thoroughly should make a great difference.
As for silver jewellery the best thing to do is wear it! Silver jewellery naturally tarnishes and it will happen quicker if it is lying in a box for a long period of time. But if it has been left in your jewellery box for a while and has already started to turn a gold black colour than there is a simple fix. You can invest in a jewellery cleaner, typically only a few pounds Silver dip removes the oxides and brings the bright white appearance back, but again remember to rinse it thoroughly in running water and dry with a soft cloth. If you are a little unsure of using the dip you can also find a silver cloth will do the job just fine!
At times even this won't be enough and you may need your jewellery professionally polished and checked over, but don't worry Jane Harrison Jewellery can help you there!
